The Purpose of the Blog

I've decided that a new chapter in my life deserves a new blog, so I've deleted the old one and I'm starting from scratch. I'm still the snarky girl from My Little World of Mediocrity, just with fewer real-life details (teachers get fired for that now...yay for free speech!).

On my 27th birthday (10/31/10), I made a decision: The following year was going to be my year to just enjoy myself. That plan...well, it crashed and burned. So here I am again, with a slighty less ambitious but no less nerdy challenge.

The story goes that with the craziness of the last few years, I haven't indulged in nearly enough of what I used to enjoy. I'm not an outgoing person by any stretch of the imagination: you'll never find me in a club, and I turn down almost every invitation to a party I receive. But of course, even if I wanted to be outgoing I couldn't; I live in Podunk, Arkansas, where the closest place where anything's open after 9 is over an hour away.

But here's what I do enjoy: I like books, I like movies, I like wearing pajamas and sitting with my dogs on my couch. Once upon a time, I'd read at least two books a week and watch movies like they were a dying medium. Almost everything I've done lately has been about my degree, my job, my family, or my students. I spend all my time worrying about what I should be accomplishing and stressing about the things I have not yet done.

This year's personal challenge is a little different from last year. From December 1, 2011, to December 1, 2012, I'll be going through the alphabet for books and movies--26 of each in one year. Like I said, it's slightly less ambitious than my 100/100 plan from last year, but definitely more realistic. The 100/100 goal made me stressed as I fell behind, which totally defeated the purpose. It's all about enjoying myself in the here and now--recapturing two of my old hobbies that have been sitting in a dark corner for far too long--and not worrying about where I'm going or where I should be going.

This is where I'll keep track of my counts for each. And occasionally I'll ramble.
